Well Prepared for the Trail – The Foundation for Happy Hikes with Your Dog

Hi everyone,

A great hike with your dog doesn’t start at the trailhead — it starts much earlier, with how you plan your adventure. Good preparation is the key to enjoying the mountains safely, calmly, and fully — and to creating memories worth keeping.

As a dog trainer and mountain lover, I’ve learned over the years that those who plan well have the most rewarding days out — for themselves and their dogs.

Here are a few things we always keep in mind before heading out:

• Plan your route: check the trail, elevation, terrain, and weather — and make a realistic time plan, including breaks and maybe a few rest stops or mountain huts along the way. That way, you can relax and enjoy the day without rushing or overexerting your dog.

• Choose the right hike: pick a trail that matches both your fitness and your dog’s experience. There’s nothing wrong with going for something easy — too much enthusiasm can lead to fatigue or strain. What matters most is feeling good together and having fun.

• Gear up well: details make the difference — water, snacks, weather-appropriate clothing, sturdy shoes, paw protection if needed, and a comfortable, well-fitting harness and a good leash. We, of course, love using our Dolomitic Harness and Leash combo on every adventure. 😉

When you choose the right trail, plan your time wisely, and start well prepared, you’ve already taken the most important step toward a memorable experience — safe, relaxed, and full of joy.

See you on the trail, and happy planning for your next adventures! 🐾
Julia
